Sn 2005ap: a Most Brilliant Explosion

چکیده
We present unfiltered photometric observations with ROTSE-III and optical spectroscopic follow-up with the HET and Keck of the most luminous supernova yet identified, SN 2005ap. The spectra taken about 3 days before and 6 days after maximum light show narrow emission lines (likely originating in the dwarf host) and absorption lines at a redshift of z = 0.2832, which puts the peak unfiltered magnitude at −22.7±0.1 absolute. Broad P-Cygni features corresponding to Hα, C III, N III, and O III, are further detected with a photospheric velocity of ∼ 20,000 km s−1. Unlike other highly luminous supernovae such as 2006gy and 2006tf that show slow photometric evolution, the light curve of SN 2005ap indicates a 1-3 week rise to peak followed by a relatively rapid decay. The spectra also lack the distinct emission peaks from moderately broadened (FWHM ∼ 2,000 km s−1) Balmer lines seen in SN 2006gy and SN 2006tf. We briefly discuss the origin of the extraordinary luminosity from a strong interaction as may be expected from a pair instability eruption or a GRB-like engine encased in a H/He envelope. SN 2006tf: PRECURSOR ERUPTIONS AND THE OPTICALLY THICK REGIME OF EXTREMELY LUMINOUS TYPE IIn SUPERNOVAE
SN 2006tf is the third most luminous supernova (SN) discovered so far, after SN 2005ap and SN 2006gy. SN 2006tf is valuable because it provides a link between two regimes: (1) luminous type IIn supernovae powered by emission directly from interaction with circumstellar material (CSM), and (2) the most extremely luminous SNe where the CSM interaction is so optically thick that energy must diffus...
متن کاملThe Exceptionally Luminous Type Ii-linear Supernova 2008es
We report on our early photometric and spectroscopic observations of the extremely luminous Type II supernova (SN) 2008es. With an observed peak optical magnitude of mV = 17.8 and at a redshift z = 0.213, SN 2008es had a peak absolute magnitude of MV = −22.3, making it the second most luminous SN ever observed. The photometric evolution of SN 2008es exhibits a fast decline rate (∼0.042 mag d), ...
متن کاملFactors affecting selectivity of brilliant green-phenol red agar for salmonellae.
Commercial brilliant green (BG)-sulfa agar was found to be nonselective toward a test series of Enterobacteriaceae. Various formulations of BG were prepared by using Trypticase soy agar (BBL) as a base. Results were more reproducible when BG dye was added after sterilization than before. Sulfonamides improved selectivity as compared with brilliant green alone. Sulfanilamide (SN) was slightly mo...

We report on our early photometric and spectroscopic observations of the extremely luminous Type II supernova (SN) 2008es. With an observed peak optical magnitude of mV = 17.6 mag and at a redshift z = 0.213, SN 2008es had a peak absolute magnitude of MV = −22.5 mag, making it the second most luminous SN ever observed. The photometric evolution of SN 2008es exhibits a fast decline rate (∼0.042 ...
متن کاملSuperluminous supernovae: 56Ni power versus magnetar radiation
Much uncertainty surrounds the origin of superluminous supernovae (SNe). Motivated by the discovery of the Type Ic SN 2007bi, we study its proposed association with a pair-instability SN (PISN). We compute stellar evolution models for primordial ∼200 M stars, simulating the implosion/explosion due to the pair-production instability, and use them as inputs for detailed non-local thermodynamic eq...
